Hey American Crafts fans! It’s Elsie here and I’m so excited to be sharing my first project with you all today as part of the new Design Team! I love everything about Halloween but for this week’s project I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could create a Halloween page with no Halloween-themed scrappy supplies.
What are the colours you associate with Halloween? Mine are orange, black and purple, but who says that you have to use those for your Halloween pages? I decided to work with Dear Lizzy’s gorgeous ‘Stargazer’ collection for this layout as I love the overall colour scheme of the collection, as well as all of the star motifs, which I knew would work well with a magical Halloween theme.
An easy way to make a non-themed collection work on your Halloween pages is to create embellishments or use titles that are ‘quintessentially Halloween’ and so are instantly recognisable!
I started with my title: ‘Double, Double, Toil & Trouble’, and backed it with four of my favourite patterns from the Stargazer line. By using a title that is a well-known Halloween phrase, you don’t have to be restricted and use typical Halloween colours if you don’t want to. I chose a few of my favourite colours: mint, yellow, red and pink and this Halloween page suddenly felt a lot more me!
I used a die-cutting machine for the more intricate shapes, such as the title and witch’s silhouette. If you don’t have a machine, you can always create your own embellishments by hand. To give an example, I drew my witch’s hat onto my chosen patterned paper and cut it out with some scissors – so simple! Also for a cute and whimsical touch, place your homemade witch’s hat on the person in your photo’s head!
It doesn’t matter which supplies or methods you use to create your embellishments, just make sure that they’re Halloween-related in some way and you’re good to go!
Obviously the Stargazer collection doesn’t have any Jack-O-Lantern images, but it does have peaches! So I decided to reimagine that the potion in the cauldron was a cute peach potion! I fussy-cut a few peaches and glued them down with some foam dots to make it look like they were bubbling from the potion… There was definitely never going to be any gross, green and slimy potions on this page!
Remember, you can always reimagine your supplies and make them work for you! This Halloween layout may be unconventional, but it’s totally me!
Thanks for stopping by today!
