Hello there, friends! It’s Meghann Andrew, and I’m excited to be here with you on the AC blog today. The newest DIY Shop products have recently hit the stores, and my favorite products in the lineup are the awesome cork tiles! The possibilities with them are endless! They could be used to create a custom corkboard on your wall, but I want to show you a different way to use them today: to create beautiful, painted trivets for the “hostess-with-the-mostess” in your life!
I started off this project with simple products: the DIY Shop cork tiles, washi tape and Vicki Boutin Mixed Media acrylic paint. I created two different designs on my tiles, one an arrangement of stripes in different widths using wide DIY Shop washi tape, the other, a herringbone pattern, created with a thinner washi from the All the Good Things collection. This is the fun part! There are so many different design possibilities here, so use your imagination!
After rubbing my washi tape to ensure that it was stuck firmly to the cork surface and sides, I began to paint using the Vicki Boutin Mixed Media acrylic paints and brushes. The coverage was fantastic, but I decided to paint two coats of yellow and pink to make sure they were bright enough.
Before my paint dried, I peeled off the washi tape. At this stage, if you notice any bleeding of the paint outside of the lines you can take a thin paintbrush dipped in fresh water and a paper towel to clean those areas up.
While my trivets were drying, I decided to make greeting cards to coordinate—because no hostess gift is complete without a card, too! The new Field Notes collection matched the paint colors I chose perfectly, and I started to create two cards that used different patterned paper backgrounds and fussy-cut flowers, but still had the same design to save me time.
I used the new Field Notes stamp and die set to stamp “you’re awesome” as my greeting on both cards, before sewing the tags onto the card front to finish it off with a bit of texture. Once my cards were complete, I tied each one to its painted trivet using the lovely AC Gift kraft raffia ribbon. I love the natural texture it adds to the lovely package. No additional wrap was needed!
Now I have two beautiful hostess gifts ready to give! Be sure to grab the new DIY Shop cork tiles and start customizing them today!
