Hello there! The Vicki Boutin and American Crafts collaborations have resulted in some of my favorite products, and the beautiful supplies in the Field Notes collection are no exception! I love the naturalistic graphics mixed with bright colors, and I just happened to have the perfect story to document with it: the day that we released my daughter’s newly formed Monarch butterfly into the wild! Let’s take a look at my new 12” x 12” layout:
I started off with the brightly colored stripe of the One of a Kind paper, covering the left 1/3 of my page. Once I knew the placement of my photos and journaling card, cut from the Good Stuff paper, I decided that this layout background needed some weight on the bottom right corner. I wanted to try out a new-to-me mixed-media technique, so I grabbed some of my favorite Vicki Boutin products and got to work!
By mixing water with the Vicki Boutin watercolor paints in a spray bottle, I created my own spray mist, and used it to color the gorgeous butterfly stencils from the Field Notes collection with three different colors before adding the bright yellow surround. This created the perfect amount of visual interest in the corner to balance the weight of my page.
Now that my major page elements were added, it was time to embellish! The ephemera die-cut pack supplied the majority of my layout details, including the title—“look at this.” Putting it next to the photo of my daughter looking at her butterfly before we released him was perfect! The colorful die-cut butterflies added along the patterned paper edge helped to soften that transition to the layout background, and reinforced the story.
To add some more visual interest on the left side of the page, I coordinated colorful stickers with the colorful stripes on the One of a Kind paper, using saying that really worked for this story from both the watercolor and chipboard sticker packs.
The “notes” journaling card, cut from the Good Stuff paper, created the perfect backdrop for this story, and I couldn’t be happier with how the Field Notes collection elements pulled it all together with my photos.
Do you want to find out how I created my own watercolor spray mists to create my mixed-media corner? I created a process video to show you just how easily this page came together with the Vicki Boutin mixed media products and the Field Notes collection! Take a look, and thanks so much for joining me on the American Crafts blog today!
